Abstract:Managers and professionals in the UK National health service have experienced dramatic change during the past 10 yrs. Within the Service, developments in the funding systems and in structure have led to radical reappraisal of the position and power of professionals, doctors especially. Semi-autonomous local trusts have been created to provide health-care to order, and to reach financial and other performance targets or face possible closure. Due to this development, doctors have been focused on management as never before. Many doctors, however, adopt the view that implementation of a management culture has led to more problems than solutions.
