Abstract: | This paper discusses gender and managerial identities in organizational life in the context of the recent change in higher education in Sweden and England with the new public management. The argument is that Acadamic Shape Shifting is developed by academics during their time in academia and in response to the managerial reforms. Various indicative responses to the recent changes are identified. The paper consludes that the implications of Academic Shape Shifting suggest complexity in the changing character of university life, with women in middle range positions facing more difficult compromises than their male counterparts. |
