Abstract: | The television rights for professional soccer in Germany have always been sold on a monopolistic basis. This is a severe offence against competition principles and antitrust rules. It infers the well-known efficiency problems of monopolies, i.e. higher prices and reduced quantities, if compared to the competitive market solution where teams conclude individual contracts with broadcasting companies. It is not convincing to argue that league outcomes would become predictable, if financial differences among the teams would increase as a result of individual contracting. Nor would the product be less attractive to the consumers or the clubs' revenues be reduced Sports leagues certainly have economic advantages and require institutions setting up and enforcing rules and schedules (original in German). |
