Abstract: | The conceptual article is concerned with television rerun programming from the viewpoint of the industry and audience. In addition three functions are presented to explain television reruns. Television rerun programing has a cross-generational role, a social continuity role, and a collective memory role. The article argues that the cultural role of rerun viewing differs from general television viewing. The article postulates that reruns alleviate the viewers need to relive the past and know the future. |
