Abstract:The effects of labour union disputes on the supply of a company's products are discussed. Australian examples are mentioned. An illustrative case study is presented together with a simple procedure to help evaluate the potential effects of a supply interruption. The competitive structure of the market is described by the distribution of market shares across various competing brands. Changes are analyzed with statistical methods. Pre-strike and post-strike market structures are compared. Long term and short term effects are divided. When supplies were resumed, overall market shares returned to previous levels. Marketing impacts are analyzed.
