Abstract:The new year begins with global uncertainty about growth and this will have a direct impact on the demand for commodities from Africa. In turn, this will affect incomes and thus standards of living. The author gives his projections for 2003. The paper states that the 2003 outlook for commodity markets will be determined on whether or not the currently sagging global economy stages a sustainable recovery during the year, thereby leading to increases in industrial production and higher consumer spending in advanced and developing economies. The paper also states that SSA, led by South Africa, remains the principal gold-producing region. it holds 45% of the globe's proven reserves.
