Abstract:This paper investigates the reasons why nurses in the UK work on a agency basis. The data consists of a survey conducted in two nursing agencies in 2005. The study addresses two questions: 1) To what extent do supply-side preferences contribute to the decision for nurses to work on an agency basis? 2)Does agency work enable better balance between work and life? The findings reveal that flexibility is the key reason for nurses to work solely on a agency basis. Nurses also having a permanent job considered agency work as a possibility to supplement their income.
