Abstract: | This article takes a fresh standpoint on a much examined topic: it studies the identification of age, vintage and year effects in a panel of individuals or other units from the viewpoint of measuring researcher productivity. The presence of each of the three effects are tested semi-parametrically using data on the publications in 1986-1997 of 464 French physicists born in the time span of 1936-1960. The paper emphasizes the interconnectedness of identifying an age-related productivity effect or the presence or location of a productivity peak and what a researcher presupposes about the variation of vintage and time. If the conditions under which a semi-parametrical model of productivity is identified are not sufficiently specified, a researcher may end up with fallacious conclusions about the productivity-age relationship. |
