Abstract:Assaults by corporate raiders and buyouts by management are both responses to the same thing: underperformance. Best demonstrated practices must be used to fend off the predators by improving dramatically. Clear performance standards are crucial to breaking out of the underperformance trap. Yet lack of data and procedures is a major stumbling block in trying to establish objective criteria. Individual units usually protect themselves from the approaches of head office staff or external consultants when they come seeking the evidence of low performance. Management should be dedicated to the eradication of low performance.
