Abstract:Lean and agile manufacturing techniques have become synonymous with waste management, and for good reason. If there is any single common message across the diversity of themes in this issue of the Journal, it is the lesson of the people in operations who know their own efficiencies and inefficiencies. Lean organizations have learned the value of allowing these people the means to continuously improve their own local processes. The authors discuss lean manufacturing in terms of value streams and the ways that value streams support locally coordinated continuous improvement. In the first of a two-part presentation, this issue's installment discusses specific steps that lean enterprises use to organize their processes into value streams.
