Abstract:This article continues our commitment to present islands of cost and performance management excellence in government with a report from the U.S. State of Minnesota as Governor Jesse Ventura turns over his office to the new governor-elect. Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) had already embarked on the performance management journey using a Family of Measures model. An able performance manager himself, Governor Ventura brought some of his own ideas based on his mayoral experiences in city governance and supported Mn/DOT's performance management system development. The Mn/DOT managers are a politically savvy lot, and as transportation advocates for the state's citizens, they see a time not too far from now when web-based state performance management reporting will become information used during both the election and budget allocation processes. Minnesota's citizens already have access to this information on the state's web site. Perhaps also other state departments will follow in Mn/DOT's footsteps.
