Abstract:The use of information technology (IT) should be planned with a high degree of care but most senior management is not interested and does not understand it. It should be developed like a business strategy. In developing an information strategy, analysis should be made from the top down, and workshops should be set up with all levels of management. The author explains the experience at Simon Engineering in combining Michael Porter's value chain and five-forces approach with the more usual information engineering methodology for information planning. A workshop approach was adopted and the conclusion drawn from the information strategy must be seen and developed as an integral part of the business strategy.
