Abstract:Some of the main strategic responses adopted by large corporations of the European Community to the post-1992 single market are examined. Internally, corporate strategies tend to concentrate on main product lines. Externally, cooperative agreements, mergers and acquisitions play an increasing role in the process of European restructuring as a response to increased competition. It is shown how the European competition policy attempts to monitor such strategies. Concerning cartels, the European authorities follow a pragmatic approach. Among other things, they consider that cooperation in R and D must be encouraged. For mergers and acquisitions strict regulations are devised.
