Abstract:The UK market for wine (light wine, sparkling wine and champagne, fortified wine, sherry and port, vermouths and other aromatics) is examined. After steady growth over 1986-1989, volume sales of wine dropped in 1990. Value increased 9 percent to GBP 4.1 billion. White wine, the major sector, declined by 1 percent. Trading up has tended to benefit red wine sales. British-made wine was a strong growth area in 1990. Vermouth and aperitifs declined in 1990. Port sales have been growing at around 5 percent a year. Low and de-alcoholised wines are a growth sector. Growth in sales is forecast for 1992.
