| Abstract: | Images of reality should not be confused with the reality itself. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has a painting by the Belgian painter Rene Magritte called "La pipe". It shows simply a pipe, with a thin trail of smoke going out of it. That is almost all. Then there is a short subtitle at the bottom of the painting, saying "ceci n'est pas une pipe" (this is not a pipe) - a very down-to-earth reminder that images of reality should not be confused with reality itself. |
