Abstract:In spite of the extent of telephone ownership in the U.K. rising to levels comparable with those in the USA, the use of telephone based methods in the U.K. remains at consistently and significantly lower level. The major reason for this is the presumed inability to apply two stage Random Digit Dialling (Mitofsky-Waksberg) sampling methods (RDD methods). This paper reviews the position in the U.K. and the deficiencies of telephone sampling methods used there hitherto. There are proposals presented for a new method of implementing RDD in the U.K. In addition, data from a number of surveys is presented, carried out to test the proposed methods. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed method is reviewed.
