| Abstract: | According to the European Commission (Commission, 1999a), in 1998 output in the European Union (EU) grew at an estimated rate of 2.9 per cent. This compares favourably with a rate of 2.7 per cent in the previous year and was the best performance since 1990. Thus, the recovery which began in 1994, following the recession of 1992-93, and which suffered a brief pause in late 1995 and early 1996, was both maintained and strengthened. |
