Abstract:For better or for worse, faculty senates (hereafter as: f-s.) remain a critical component of campus governance (hereafter as: c-g). Yet an understanding of how f-s. with various structures and cultures operate in the context of c-g. is limited. Based on site visits to 12 campuses, the author provides four models for understanding f-s: functional, influential, ceremonial, and subverted. These models provide a conceptual frame to comprehend f-s. in the interest of improving the effectiveness of c-g.
