Abstract:A recent study sponsored by Bank of America and Blue Shield of California revealed that retirees who received health counselling and educational materials spent 27 p.c. fewer days in hospital and made 7 p.c. fewer doctor visits than those who did not. Three groups were formed from 5,680 selected retirees whose average age was 68 years. The first group received the full intervention, including personal health habit questionnaires, individualized risk appraisal, recommendation letters and educational materials. the second group received only questionnaires, the third served as a control group. The figures suggest an estimated savings in direct medical costs of about 133 USD per year.
