Abstract:The possible environmental implications of electric power transmission are described, related in particular to possible expansions of the transmission grid serving the USA, which has come to extend beyond the national boundaries. The environmental impacts of transmission that must be considered in the planning process are discussed. It is also noted that the possible human health effects of electromagnetic fields have important planning and siting implications. Finally, it is emphasized, that transmission planning should occur within the context of a coherent overall energy policy which accounts for environmental externalities.
