Abstract:Following the example of Japan, the governments of three nations in East Asia are plowing money into development work aimed at creating high-technology products that will have an impact on global markets. Despite the amount of government planning involved, the method works comfortably within fully capitalist economies. It is enabling Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan to build up the R&D infrastructure that they need for a new step in their industrial development: moving from copying Western-made products to developing their own.
