Abstract:German companies are seeking new ways of sustaining earnings growth as they move out of recession. Cost-cutting is a central feature but some companies are also seeking to diversity. Analysts' hopes for German equities this year were nothing if not modest, after the boom and bust of 1993. But they have not yet been achieved. Confidence has recently been boosted, however, by Helmut Kohl's victory in the October elections and the belief that the US is unlikely to raise interest rates rapidly.
