Abstract:The Czechs are letting their industry fall behind in restructuring. They should follow the lead of the other Visegrad countries in forcing market control. Hungary was the first to decide. It would sort out its obsolete industry by flogging it off to foreigners, who would inject the necessary capital and know-how to make it competitive. Now the remaining Visegrad countries are acting to drag industry into the real world. Poland and Slovakia may seem chaotic, but both are creating profit-oriented mechanisms which will ensure market, not government selection of corporate culture.
