Abstract:Hungary and Poland could be within sight of sorting out their financial sectors. But the Czech Republic and slovakia look increasigly off course. Backward, politically controlled and irrelevant to the bulk of the population, it is easy to be damning about Central European banks. And rightly so. The under-development of the financial sector is holding back economic and industrial growth, with cash-starved companies relying on their own resources to fund expansion. The extraordinary developments in Central European banking this year have to be put in this context.
