| Abstract: | Hungary's success in attracting foreign investors has led to surging exports and EU accolades. But dig beneath the surface, and most companies are struggling to survive. Hungary is the region's success story. Outside commentators from the EU to the IMF have given the country the thumbs up, as the economy surges ahead on the back of buoyant exports. But look at the figures again, and GDP is still below 1989 levels, real wages have tumbled, and much of industry is as stagnant as consumer spending. |
