Abstract:The author of this article states that Central and Eastern Europe has gone a long way towards establishing free media, but now politicians are becoming dangerously intolerant of criticism. First the author considers the last summer situation in Russia, referring the words of Russia's media minister that it was impossible to have a free society without freedom of speech and free media, but such a situation couldn't be exaggerated to the point of absurdity. The author states that recent events do suggest that media freedom is being eroded - and not only in Russia. Even Central European countries close EU membership have launched sustained attacks upon media freedom. Then the author considers the situation of media freedom in other countries and provides a number of examples on this subject.
