Abstract:Poland is heading for elections with some hefty economic and social problems. But it's not fair to blame them all on the current government. In this paper the authors provide the survey of Poland. Their main statements and findings are following: for once, the government's blunder was not foot-dragging over reform; untargeted benefits make Poland's workers dangerously expensive; many fear that things will simply slow to a crawl under the SLD administration; Poland's big advantage now - its sheer size - could start to work against it; unfortunately, Polish exporters will have to go to the gym under less than perfect conditions; urban Poles seem remarkably blase about the forces reshaping the Polish countryside.
