Abstract:One of the most significant business phenomena lately was the rise and fall of the ‘New Economy’ at the turn of the millennium. The authors examine the phenomenon of ‘New Economy’ as a culturally defined discourse by analyzing a large number of print advertisements of UK’s Financial Times published in year 2000. The concept of ‘New Economy’ is explored from a social constructionist point of view in a turbulent business environment. The main contribution of the article is the empirical study of discursive phenomena in late capitalist societies. The authors propose that the concept of ‘New Economy’ should be understood in terms of its ability to grasp various meanings. This ability is profoundly ideological; it allows socio-historical obsessions and anxieties to seem like natural or logical behaviour.
