Abstract: | Economic development, tourism and demographic changes are closely connected. The characteristics defining this relationship are present in tourist destinations at both macro and micro-levels, besides their historical evolution and geographic attributes. From the perspective of the re-structuring thesis, the shift from fordism to post-fordism and the human mobility tied to such systems are observable in these areas. Based on this framework, this paper analyses the tourist-residential progress and the migratory patterns of the Balearic and the Canary Islands. The investigation of two areas in both archipelagos (Calvià and Maspalomas) permits for a recognition of some differences in their tourist specialization and social space. Nevertheless, tourist-residential processes create common characteristics: growth in social heterogeneity and residential segregation. |
