| Abstract: | Merger activity in the U.S. hit $660 billion in 1996, obliterating the previous year's record of $519 billion. The ranking of the top 20 deals is a list of handshakes and of rational strategies. The deals that were announced in 1996 were included: deals that were finalized 1996 but had been announced earlier were excluded. Virtually all of the deals have sensible strategic rationalities, like telecom companies looking to to take advantage of deregulation and defense companies consolidating. |
