Abstract:Since the early 1990s, regulators across the globe have faced increasing pressure from media firms to liberalise domestic media and cross-media ownership restrictions. Based on empirical research carried out in the UK, this paper examines the "economic" case put forward in favour of deregulation. Findings suggest that, although factors will affect performance, there is generally a strong and positive correlation between the market share and the operating profitability of firms involved in either television or radio broadcasting or newspaper publishing.
