Abstract:It is a 'magic wand' that can turn around unproductive workplaces and transform reluctant employees into enthusiasts. But reality is rarely so simple or so easy to transform and celebrating success through corporate fairy tales is unlikely to help future practice. This article draw together many of the celebrations of BA's success and locates these 'fictionalized' accounts into the context of that firm's environment, investments and structures. The 'story' that emerges from this more detailed study is both more mundane and more complex than the 'fairy tale' accounts would have us believe. The lessons it has for managers include a condemnation of rhetorical flourishes unaccompanied by substantive change and concerns about seeking to use others as a means to an end, rather than as ends in themselves.
