Abstract:The impact of background media on students´performance and time spent on homework assignments, paper-and-pencil and memorization, was studied using a test group of eighth-grade students. The test was conducted with either a soap opera, music videos, radio music, or no medium in the background. Watching a soap opera interfered with the students performance, however, irrespective of the medium employed, music left the performance unaffected. The influence of background media on the amount of time spent on the completion of the assignment was not proven.
