Abstract:The relationship between trade unions and the media in industrialized countries has long been an uneasy one. With the importance of television in creating images and setting the "agenda" for public discussion now well established, trade unions are having to develop new media strategies. On the basis of a survey of this relationship and an examination of the current tactics, some questions are raised about the trade union's approach to dealing with the media. Trade unions have also opted to make use of new media technologies, in particular video and cable television, to communicate directly with members. Another example of the more creative and active use of communication is television advertising by trade unions.
