Abstract:For almost five years now, France Telecom has been utilizing a procedure of systematic social self-observation. The underlying sociological theory is described. The problems of methodology of social observation using panel data are discussed. A simple model of social observation of organizational social facts is developed. The main items of a questionnaire based on this model are listed. The objectives of France Telecom's unusual initiative are considered, notably in terms of the evolution of the organization and the focus of its actions. The experience gained from the social self-observation at France Telecom is analyzed. The limits of this method are examined, while also pointing to its usefulness for managers.
