Abstract:This paper explores trade-offs btw. knowledge (hereafter as: kn.) exploitation (here as: explt.) and exploration (here as: explor.) activities (here as: act./acts.) This paper addresses the following question: To what extent does an investment in one explt. act. hinder the development of an explor. act. within the firm? To reveal the trade-offs btw. explt. and explor. acts.,both changes within and btw. these acts., over time, are studied. Based on data drawn from an in-depth study of several product development project teams in one high-tech company, it is concluded that by investing in explt. acts., a firm may limit some specific explor. acts.
