Abstract:The article claims that Braudel's concept of 'material civilization' is a useful way to begin to understand the sociological significance of the relationship between the material world and the form of society. The concepts of 'technization' and 'civilization' are used to further understand the relationship. It is suggested that the concept of the 'morality of things' is useful in summarizing the civilizing effects of material objects and addressing their sociological significance. The paper introduces some issues for further sociological study of material civilization.
