Abstract:This article examines how actors interpret the ethics of new technologies and cope with their unethical use. The study focus on the impact of ethical concerns on the use and future of Online Reserve Auctions (ORA). ORA is an e-procurement system that enables suppliers to compete in real time by decreasing their bids. The study is based on qualitative case study of ORA use in the context of a major international French retailer and its suppliers. The results suggest that the establishment of formal ethical criteria on technically acceptable use by the ORA initiators is inadequate to resolve the ethical issues surrounding the introduction of technology. The study shows that lobbying, rumor and public discourse can impact on the interpretations of the technology regarding ethics.
