Abstract: | In this article, the author states that since 1998, FORTUNE 500 companies have been trying to figure out what to do with their Web businesses. The entities that resulted - often referred as carve-outs - were going to become bigger than the parent corporations and reap vast rewards for those involved. Then the author answers the question does a FORTUNE 500's dot-com project really need to exist as a separate entity. He states that for companies considering carve-outs today, the simple answer is yes - and no. No, when the carve-out is nothing more than an online means of distributing the company's main products. Further, the author states that new focus on strategy returns the carve-out to its roots as a means for building a new business, not just for minting money. |
