Abstract:Technology is just a part of the pursuit to improve mankind's ability to deal collectively with complex problems , says Douglas C. Engelbart. The computer is a tool - one destined to be more important than the printing press. It's real worth is that it makes it possible to augment the ways people bring brainpowder to bear on complex problems. First there is a capability infrastructure, which we use to do our jobs. An improvement infrastructure sets of activities that make the organization better, and we use it far less than we should. Three kind of activities go on in companies: "A" activities are directly relevant to what you sell, they increase profits but not profitability. "B" activities are the things you do to improve the "A" work. The C activities involve improving the organization's ability to do "B" work.
