Abstract: | Results obtained from estimating fossil fuel cost shares in the generation of electricity from two models, one national and one regional, are compared and contrasted and some comments are offered on the revealed underlying economics of fuel choice. The main conclusions are that a region model of fossil fuel generation at utilities has been presented that improves on its national counterpart in very important ways. It reveals the underlying economics of fuel generation by providing elasticity estimates that seem more plausible than those already found in the literature. The regional model outperforms the national model in the prediction of oil and gas shares and quantities. |
