Abstract:Quality of work life programs should flourish in the new, more cooperative relationship between unions and management. Indeed, with the active support of unions, QWL programs can increase the constructive interaction between employer and employee and the mutual benefits to both. Four key QWL activities attract union interest: 1. finding solutions to quality-related problems; 2. work restructuring; 3. improvements in the workplace; 4. creating innovative reward schemes. The distinction between QWL programs and collective bargaining is made clear. A framework for analysis and a systematic approach for coordinating the introduction, implementation, and maintenance of QWL practices is provided.
