| Abstract: | The American movement of worker participation in decision making is examined. The role of the development of participation in the social history of the labour movement in the United States is explained. The worker participation is related to the new practices of on-the-job negotiation. Unlike European countries, the establishment of a system of collective decision making about work problems is associated with development of the unions in factories. Some characteristics of collective bargaining and the quality of working life movement are also reviewed. |
