Abstract:Mega-events are regarded in the paper as large-scale cultural or sporting events designed to attract tourists and media-attention. The paper attempts to explore the impacts and functions of mega-events and to reflect more widely on the sociological and interdisciplinary perspectives, concepts and research agendas necessary for an adequate comprehension of mega-events and modern tourism in general. The author suggests that the concepts of post-industrialism and post-nationalism, at both macro and micro levels, are useful in conceiving of an economic sociology of contemporary tourism. It is stressed that we need a better understanding of tourism as a major new "industrial sector" and as vital factor in economic modernisation and structural socio-economic change.
