Abstract:The purpose of the paper is to develop the understanding of the dynamics of economic vulnerability by combining features of recent statistical modeling approaches of poverty dynamics with multidimensional deprivation. The authors conduct a comparative analysis in nine countries and find that regardless of the time and nation, an economically vulnerable social class can always be identified. This class is usually at risk to fall below a critical resource level, exposed to material deprivation and experiences subjective economic stress. The variation in economic vulnerability across nations is higher than the variation of income poverty.
