Abstract:It is shown through previous empirical research that self-employment (hereafter as: s-empl.) is correlated across generations. This paper contributes to the existing literature in two ways: 1. By using French data from the European Community Household Panel Survey, a further examination of the intergenerational correlation (here as: intr-corr.) among the s-empl. is provided, especially by investigating to what extent the intr-corr. in s-empl. reflects occupational following, 2. By investigating the differences btw. first- and second-generation s-empl. workers and their possible explanations. Although the results indicate that having s-empl. parents increases the probability of being s-empl., irrespective of occupation, it is observed that a large majority of individuals enter the same or very similar occupation as their parents. In addition, some differences btw. the first- and second-generation s-empl. are also revealed etc.
