Abstract:This article deals with the topic of formal institutions and informal networks in corporate governance practices. Using the cases of Denmark, Norway and Sweden the paper investigates the effects of "small world" characteristics of ownership and board networks. The findings of the empirical study suggest a wide range of various formal board and ownership structures in these Scandinavian countries. However, significant similarities were found in for instance political stability, government effectiveness and control of corruption. In conclusion the article states that in terms of trust, information diffusion and reputation mechanisms Denmark, Norway and Sweden can all be seen as "small worlds".
