Abstract:It is found that children from high socio-economic backgrounds generally perform better at school than children form lower socio-economic environment. This paper concerns the role of early parental reading socialization and school involvement and the impact of these factors on children's academic achievement in the course of the entire course of primary school education. The study is based on the Dutch primary education cohort study. The findings reveal that parental reading socialization and parental school involvement explain part of the association between social class and academic performances. The impact of these factors is stronger for children's language achievement than for arithmetic performance.
