Abstract:Paper-based payment mechanisms serve a variety of objectives in international trade. They could easily constitute the sole mode of payment or alternatively form one element in a complex payment and financing scheme. Recently, electronic banking techniques with their attributes of speed, reduced cost and efficiency have come to challenge the way and manner in which these paper-based payment mechanisms are used in international trade. This article broadly examines the effects of electronic banking techniques on the use of these documentary mechanisms in international trade.
