Abstract:Since peaking in 1979 at 4.1 m bulk barrels, the beer market has been in decline, with 1993 sales volume 15% below that level at 35.4 m bb. Most of the contraction took place in the early 1980s and early 1990s, both periods of economic difficulty; throughout most of the 1980s volume held up well. Beer remains by far the biggest category in the drinks market but its share of alcohol consumption has been in long-term decline, falling (on a pure alcohol basis) from 73.8% to 59.6%.
